Who We Are

We're a team of passionate anglers, outdoor enthusiasts, and gear reviewers who believe in transparency and honesty. Our reviewers have spent hundreds of hours on frozen lakes from Wisconsin to North Dakota, testing shelters in temperatures as low as -20°F.

Unlike generic review sites that accept manufacturer incentives or rely on secondhand data, we purchase and test all shelters ourselves. That means our reviews are 100% independent and written to help you make the best decision.

Our Mission

Why We Started

Ice fishing is more than a hobby-it's a way of life for thousands of anglers across the northern U.S. and Canada. But choosing the right shelter shouldn't feel like rolling the dice. Too often, buyers rely on incomplete reviews, outdated forums, or marketing fluff from brands that prioritize sales over accuracy.

We started ThunderBay Review to give anglers a trusted source of information. Our mission is simple:

  • To provide honest, detailed reviews of ThunderBay ice shelters based on real-world testing
  • To highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of each model
  • To help anglers avoid costly mistakes and find a shelter that fits their lifestyle

Whether you're fishing alone on a small inland lake or hosting a group on a frozen bay, we want you to have the confidence that comes from using a shelter built for your specific needs.

Our reviews go beyond star ratings and marketing claims. We test for:

  • Setup time - Can one person assemble it in under 10 minutes?
  • Wind resistance - Does it hold up in 20+ mph gusts?
  • Insulation - Is it warm enough for early-season or late-winter fishing?
  • Durability - Does the fabric, frame, and zippers hold up after multiple uses?

We're here to help you fish smarter, not harder. And that starts with knowing exactly what you're buying.

Founder's Note

I began ice fishing as a teenager in northern Minnesota. My first shelter was a hand-me-down tent-style shelter that took 45 minutes to set up and leaked at the seams. Years later, I upgraded to a hub-style shelter-and realized how much better the experience could be.

But finding the right shelter wasn't easy. Reviews were scattered, brands made bold claims, and it was hard to know what was really worth the money. That frustration led to the creation of ThunderBay Review. We're not just reviewing shelters-we're improving the ice fishing experience for anglers everywhere.

Meet the Team

Our Experts

Our team combines decades of ice fishing experience with a commitment to thorough, unbiased reviews. Each reviewer brings a unique background-from competitive ice anglers to outdoor educators-ensuring we cover every angle.

We don't just read specs-we live with these shelters. We fish from them, sleep in them (when necessary), and test them in real winter conditions. That hands-on approach is what sets us apart.

Meet the people behind ThunderBay Review:

Mark Jensen - Founder & Lead Reviewer

12+ years ice fishing • 5+ years reviewing ice shelters

Mark started fishing Lake of the Woods at age 14. He's tested over 20 ice shelters across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. His reviews focus on practicality-is the shelter really as easy to set up as the commercial claims? He's also a certified outdoor educator and teaches winter survival skills.

Lisa Carter - Technical Reviewer & Engineer

Mechanical Engineer • 8+ years testing outdoor gear

Lisa brings a data-driven approach to shelter reviews. She measures wind load, insulation values, and material durability using professional-grade tools. Her detailed breakdowns help anglers understand the "why" behind each rating.

James "Big Jim" O'Connor - Field Tester & Safety Specialist

Ice fishing guide • 15+ years on frozen lakes

Big Jim has guided ice anglers on lakes across the Midwest. He focuses on safety and usability-can a shelter handle a group of six? Is it stable on uneven ice? His field notes include real-world scenarios most reviewers miss.

Sarah Miller - Content & Buyer Guide Specialist

Outdoor journalist • 6 years covering winter sports

Sarah writes our buyer guides and comparison articles. She digs into pricing trends, warranty details, and user feedback to help anglers understand not just what's available-but what's worth buying.

How We Work Together

Each review involves multiple team members. Mark and Big Jim handle setup and field testing, Lisa evaluates materials and engineering, and Sarah compiles data into clear, actionable insights. We cross-check findings and publish only after consensus.

We also rely on a network of trusted anglers across the region. These "field reviewers" test shelters in their local conditions and provide feedback on what works in real life-not just in our controlled tests.

Our Review Process

How We Test

We don't just read specs and call it a day. Our testing process is designed to simulate real-world use, from the first setup to the final breakdown. Here's how we evaluate each ThunderBay ice shelter:

1. Setup & Breakdown

  • Solo setup: Time measured from bag to fully assembled (aim: under 10 minutes for hub models)
  • Group setup: Can two people assemble it quickly and correctly?
  • Instructions: Are they clear, accurate, and illustrated?
  • Tool-free assembly: Can it be set up without extra tools?

2. Weather Resistance

We test shelters in multiple conditions:

  • Wind: Shelters are exposed to 20+ mph gusts using a leaf blower and natural wind
  • Snow load: Simulated with weighted tarps to test frame strength
  • Rain/sleet: Tested during early-season fishing trips

3. Insulation & Heat Retention

We measure temperature inside vs. outside using a calibrated thermometer.

  • No heater: How warm is it with body heat alone?
  • With heater: We test a small propane heater (e.g., Mr. Heater Buddy) to assess safety and efficiency
  • Condensation: How much moisture builds up inside?

4. Durability & Materials

We inspect:

  • Fabric thickness and coating (measured with a micrometer)
  • Zipper quality (tested with 100+ cycles)
  • Frame strength (steel vs. fiberglass, thickness, bend tests)
  • Seam stitching and reinforcement

5. Comfort & Usability

  • Seating: Is there room for chairs, buckets, and gear?
  • Visibility: Can you see your tip-ups and rods from inside?
  • Storage: Are there pockets, hooks, or shelves?
  • Ventilation: Are there adjustable vents for airflow?

6. Long-Term Testing

Every shelter is used for at least 10 full days on the ice. We note:

  • Ease of breakdown in freezing conditions
  • Fabric flexibility after exposure to cold
  • Zipper function after multiple uses

Our Rating System

We use a 100-point scale to evaluate each shelter, broken into five weighted categories. This gives us a clear, objective way to compare models-and helps you understand what matters most.

Category Weight What We Test
Setup & Portability 25% Solo setup time, weight, packed size, ease of transport
Durability & Weather Resistance 30% Frame strength, fabric durability, wind/snow/rain resistance, zipper quality
Insulation & Comfort 20% Temperature retention, condensation control, heater compatibility, interior space
Features & Usability 15% Ventilation, storage, visibility, gear organization
Value for Money 10% Price vs. features, warranty, long-term value

Each category is scored out of 20 points (except Value, which is out of 10). We also include an overall rating and a recommendation summary.

Example Rating Breakdown: ThunderBay Hub 2-Person

Setup & Portability 18/20

Excellent solo setup time (7 minutes), lightweight, fits in most backpacks

Durability & Weather Resistance 16/20

Steel frame holds up well in wind, but fiberglass poles flex slightly in heavy snow

Insulation & Comfort 14/20

Good insulation with body heat, but condensation builds up quickly with a heater

Features & Usability 17/20

Multiple gear pockets, adjustable vents, clear visibility panels

Value for Money 9/10

Competitive pricing with strong features for the cost

Overall Rating: 74/100
Recommended For: Solo anglers and couples who prioritize portability and value

Our ratings are updated annually. If a brand releases a new version of a shelter, we re-test and re-rate it to ensure our reviews stay current.

Why Ratings Matter

Not all shelters are built the same. A 2-person shelter might be perfect for a solo angler who wants extra space, while a 4-person might feel cramped for a couple with gear. Our ratings help you cut through the marketing and find what truly fits your needs.

We also rate competitors. For example, in our ThunderBay vs. Eskimo comparison, we found that Eskimo shelters score higher in wind resistance but lower in value, while ThunderBay excels in portability and affordability.

Our goal isn't to give every shelter a "good" rating-it's to give you the data you need to decide if a shelter is right for you.
